Classification and processing technology of titanium tubes
Seamless Rolled Titanium Pipes
Seamless rolled titanium pipes are generally titanium round tubes, including cold-rolled pipes, spun pipes, and stretched pipes. The vast majority of titanium extruded products belong to cold-processed tube blanks, along with some hot-extruded tubes, profiles, and composite materials used as finished products. The minimum specification for these pipes is a diameter of 2mm × 0.5mm, while high-precision ultra-long pure titanium seamless pipes can reach a maximum length of 15m.
There are two main methods for preparing titanium tube blanks:
Drilling/punching extrusion process – This method results in high metal loss but ensures a uniform wall thickness in the tube blank.
Oblique rolling perforation process – This method has lower metal consumption but allows for greater tolerance in tube blank thickness.
The hot extrusion of titanium plates and titanium alloys is performed using an extruder. When using glass lubrication extrusion, the extrusion ratio can exceed that of sleeve extrusion. Titanium alloy profiles can be extruded in the glass-lubricated P-phase region with a maximum extrusion ratio of up to 150. Generally, medium-speed extrusion (50–120 mm/s) is used. The extrusion ratio of titanium is typically less than 30, particularly for TC4 titanium alloy.
There are three main types of lubricants used in the extrusion process:
Grease
Glass lubricant
Metal coating
Glass lubrication extrusion is currently the most advanced lubrication process in the world. However, in China, the industrial application of titanium tube glass lubrication extrusion has not yet been fully realized, though breakthroughs have been made in glass lubrication extrusion for titanium alloy profiles.
Coating lubrication involves covering steel billets with copper, soft steel, or other metals. However, the metal coating extrusion process is complex and costly, and the acid washing process causes significant environmental pollution. Extrusion molds are typically preheated to 300–400°C. Under normal conditions, each BE extrusion die has an approximate service life of 20 uses.
For profile extrusion, to enhance the dimensional accuracy of thin-walled profiles and improve mold wear resistance, a zirconia coating is applied to the mold using a plasma method.
When the specifications are standardized and batch sizes are large, using the oblique rolling perforation method for producing pipe blanks can yield favorable technical and economic results. There are two main types of oblique rolling perforation:
Double-roll oblique rolling perforation
Three-roll oblique rolling perforation




Titanium Alloy Drilling Pipe
Compared with solid titanium materials such as titanium rods, titanium pipes offer the same bending and torsional strength while being lighter in weight, making them an economical cross-sectional titanium material. They are widely used in the production of structural components and mechanical parts, such as petroleum drill rods, automotive transmission shafts, bicycle frames, and titanium scaffolding for construction roofs.
Using titanium tubes to manufacture circular components improves material utilization, simplifies production processes, and reduces material waste and processing time. Examples include rolling bearing rings and jack sleeves. Today, titanium tubes are extensively used in manufacturing. Additionally, titanium tubes remain essential materials in various conventional weapons, serving as key components for gun barrels and other military applications.
