MMO Titanium Anodes Description
The full name of MMO titanium anode is titanium metal oxide coated titanium anode. It is also called a DSA anode (Dimensionally Shape Stabilized Anode). It takes titanium as the substrate and brushes the precious metal coating on the titanium substrate to make it have good electrocatalytic activity and electrical conductivity.

Characteristics and Functional Features of MMO Titanium Anode
Technical Characteristics
The MMO titanium anode offers high current efficiency, excellent resistance to microbial corrosion, and a long service life. It can withstand high current densities, with an operating current density of up to <10,000 A/m². It is an oxygen-evolving anode based on industrial-grade pure titanium.
High Catalytic Activity
It is well known that platinum-plated electrodes have a high oxygen overpotential (1.563 V relative to mercurous sulfate), whereas MMO anodes exhibit a lower oxygen overpotential (1.385 V relative to mercurous sulfate). This lower overpotential facilitates oxygen evolution in the anode's active zone. As a result, the cell pressure during electrolysis is relatively low, contributing to significant energy savings. This advantage is particularly evident in the alkaline treatment of copper foil during post-treatment processes and in alkaline copper plating.
Pollution-Free MMO
The anode coating consists of a ceramic oxide derived from the precious metal iridium highly stable material that is virtually insoluble in both acids and alkalis. The coating thickness is typically 20–40 µm, and the amount of oxide released is minimal. As such, MMO anodes do not contaminate the electroplating solution, similar to platinum-plated electrodes.
High Cost-Performance Ratio
The cost of an MMO anode is approximately 80% that of a platinum-plated electrode while providing a comparable service life (based on a 3.5 mm coating thickness). In alkaline copper electroplating solutions, MMO electrodes demonstrate superior electrochemical stability, excellent catalytic performance, and long-term durability. A cost analysis comparing our MMO anodes with platinum electrodes clearly shows that MMO anodes offer a more economical solution.
Application in Printed Circuit Boards
Copper plating in printed circuit boards often requires pulse periodic reversal (PPR) technology. Platinum-plated insoluble anodes are not suitable for this application, as oxides in the sulfuric acid electrolyte can cause the platinum layer to peel over time. However, dimensionally stable anodes can overcome this issue, and MMO insoluble anode technology delivers clear performance advantages in this context.
Minimal Anode Maintenance
There is no need to halt production to clean or replenish anodes, replace anode bags, or replate the anodes. This leads to improved productivity and lower labor costs.
Long Anode Life
The lifespan of insoluble anodes depends on factors such as anode type, operating current density, and exposure to electroplating chemicals.
