The advantages and disadvantages of ASTM B265 titanium plate essentially reflect the characteristics of the titanium and titanium alloy grades it covers. Selection should be based on the specific application scenario (e.g., whether corrosion resistance, high strength, light weight, or biocompatibility is required). Choosing the appropriate grade within this standard helps balance performance requirements with cost and processing difficulty. For example, commercially pure titanium Gr.2 is preferred for chemical corrosion protection, titanium alloy Gr.5 is preferred for aviation structural parts, and medical implants can use either Gr.4 or Gr.5 depending on the requirements.

Characteristics of Common ASTM B265 titanium plate
GR1 and GR2 are grades of commercially pure titanium known for their high mechanical strength and excellent formability, making them well-suited for stamping and welding into various forms. Pure titanium plates exhibit strong corrosion resistance against chlorides, sulfides, and ammonia. However, titanium has poor corrosion resistance in oxygen-reducing environments and chromium salt media. As a result, pure titanium is primarily used in chemical equipment, reactors, heat exchangers, marine engineering, seawater desalination, shipbuilding, and oil pipelines.
Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy plate (GR5) offers high strength, high hardness, excellent corrosion resistance, and good thermal stability. GR5 is one of the most widely used titanium alloys and performs well in both high-temperature and low-temperature environments. It is mainly used in the manufacturing of aircraft engine compressor components, impellers, rockets, missiles, and structural components for high-speed aircraft.
For military applications, GR5 is used to produce automatic rifle components, mortar turrets, and recoilless gun barrels. In the medical field, titanium is used for orthopedic implants, such as bone pins, bone plates, and a variety of surgical instruments.
