Material selection for heat exchangers

For shell and tube heat exchangers, titanium alloy tubes and plates are widely used in chemical plants, natural gas processing plants, cryogenic containers, and other industries that require high-performance equipment materials.

 

Standards such as ASME SB338, ASTM B338, and GB/T3625-2007 define and regulate the grades and production of titanium alloys. The pipe diameter ranges from 6 mm to 75 mm, and the wall thickness ranges from 0.5 mm to 3 mm. The choice of material grade depends on the specific use and performance requirements of the equipment.

 

Our quality control

In terms of raw materials, titanium plates, titanium tubes, titanium flanges, and other components are strictly selected in accordance with American and national standards such as ASTM B338 and ASTM B265 to ensure that product quality is controlled from the source.

 

During manufacturing, semi-automatic or fully automatic welding machines are used to perform welding in a controlled environment. Skilled technicians handle detailed welding work to ensure product quality. As shown in the figure, the shell and tube heat exchanger is fabricated in a specially designed workshop where temperature control is critical, as improper welding operations may lead to adverse chemical reactions.

After production, each finished unit undergoes strict quality inspection before delivery. The factory inspection of titanium heat exchangers primarily focuses on performance, quality, and safety. The following are common inspection items:

 


Appearance and Structural Inspection

Surface quality: Check for cracks, scratches, corrosion, and other surface defects on titanium tubes and shells to ensure there is no damage that would compromise strength.

Structural dimensions: Verify that tube diameter, wall thickness, length, tube bundle layout, and shell dimensions conform to design drawings.

Welding quality: Ensure that weld seams are uniform and free of defects such as porosity or slag inclusions, and that the weld surface is smooth and flat.

 


Pressure Testing

Hydrostatic or air pressure test: Conduct pressure testing on both the shell side and tube side to assess sealing integrity and structural strength under rated pressure. The test pressure is typically 1.25 to 1.5 times the design pressure.

Air tightness test: Performed after pressure testing to check for leakage at all connections (e.g., between the tube sheet and titanium tubes).

 


Material and Performance Testing

Material verification: Use spectral analysis and other methods to confirm that the titanium grade, chemical composition, and mechanical properties (such as strength and corrosion resistance) meet standard specifications.

Cleanliness inspection: Ensure that there are no internal contaminants, such as oil stains or metal debris, to avoid reduced heat exchange efficiency or blockages.

 


Dimensional and Assembly Inspection

Tube bundle assembly: Check that the assembly gap and vertical alignment between the tube bundle and shell meet design requirements to prevent vibration or leakage during operation.

Accessory installation: Confirm that the installation and sealing of accessories, such as pressure gauges, thermometers, and flanges, comply with design and specification requirements.

 


Other Special Inspections

For use under special working conditions (e.g., high temperatures or highly corrosive environments), additional tests such as corrosion resistance testing and high-temperature strength testing may be required.
